Weed control is vital to maintain a healthy garden. Weeds grow where they are not wanted and can threaten your garden’s ecosystem by competing with desirable plants for nutrients, light, and space. Successfully managing these uninvited guests requires preventive and proactive control measures.
What is Weed Control?
Weed control refers to the measures taken to prevent and manage the spread of weeds in an area. It is essential to distinguish between being temporarily weed-free and maintaining long-term control over weed populations. Effective weed control involves a combination of techniques to minimise the presence of weeds without adverse effects on the environment or the plants you wish to cultivate.
Methods of Weed Control
There are several methods of weed control, the most common include:
Manual Weed Removal
Physically pulling weeds out, ensuring that the entire root system is removed to prevent regrowth. This is labour-intensive but effective.
Mulching
Covering soil with organic or inorganic material blocks sunlight, preventing weed growth and helping to retain soil moisture.
Herbicides
Chemical over-the-counter solutions can target specific weed types but must be used responsibly to avoid damage to other plants and the environment.
Professional Weed Control
This form of weed control is particularly useful for large-scale gardens or when the infestation is beyond the capabilities of amateur gardeners.

Can Weeds Be Killed Permanently?
Eliminating weeds permanently is challenging because many produce numerous seeds that remain dormant in the soil for years, ready to germinate under the right conditions. While it’s nearly impossible to eradicate all weeds forever, consistent application of control methods can significantly reduce their presence. Effective management focuses on minimising the seed bank in the soil and interrupting the weed life cycle.
Weed Prevention Tips
Prevention is the first step in keeping your garden weed-free. Here are some strategies:
- Select the Right Plants: Choose ground-cover plants that naturally suppress weeds
- Maintain Healthy Soil: Fertilise and amend soil to favour desirable plants over weeds
- Regular Mulching: Apply mulch annually to continually suppress weed growth
- Optimise Plant Spacing: Prevent weeds by planting closely enough to shade the soil, inhibiting weed germination
Weed Maintenance Tips
Once initial weed control measures are implemented, maintenance becomes vital:
- Regular Inspections: Routinely walk through your garden to catch and manage any new weed growth early
- Prompt Removal: Address weeds as soon as they appear, especially before they set seed
- Seasonal Care: Adapt your strategy through different seasons; for example, increase mulch depth in spring to thwart early germinating weeds
- Ongoing Mulch Replacement: Renew or replace mulch as it degrades to continuously block weed light exposure.
Fire Prevention
From 1st November 2024:
Homeowners with land of less than 2,000 sqm must:
- Slash/mow all grass to a height no greater than 5cm
- Prune trees and shrubs and remove all flammable matter from the whole land (except living trees)
- Ensure the roofs, gutters, and walls of all buildings on the land are free of flammable matter
Homes with land greater than 2,000 sqm must:
- Install a continuous firebreak of 4 metres wide and a minimum of 4 metres vertically from ground level around all structures and along all external boundaries of the land
- Firebreak to be clear of all bush and flammable matter
- Ensure the roofs, gutters and walls of all buildings on the land are free of flammable matter
